I employed the following "trick" when I bought my '91 100 last May: I went
to my bank, had them prepare a cashier's check made payable to the dealer
for the amount I was willing to pay for the car, including the sales tax and
license fees (call DMV and they'll calculate this for you), and faxed a copy
of it to the Sales Manager with a note stating that my offer was good until
the end of the month.
Around 3:30pm on the 31st, guess who called? "Still have that check handy?"
he asked, and three hours later, I drove away with a one-owner '91 100 with
less than 16k miles and all service records for $13k + tax (sigh ... I gave
in just a little bit). My father once told me the secret to getting a good
deal when buying a car is being able to walk away unless the price is right.
It's tough sometimes (the '67 Ferrari 330GTC that I passed on at $8500 back
in '84 comes to mind) but it seems to work more often than not...
