There is an Audi service bulletin that states that the noise can be due
to a faulty oil return check valve.  This thing is screwed into the block
on the opposite side of the intake and exhaust.  I think it has the same
intention as the anti drainback valve in the filter ... keep oil up in the
head.  I bought the part and replaced it ... didn't seem to make much diff-
erence in my car.  I found that using an oil treatment recommended by my
BIL (I don't remember which) fixed the problem in mine.  Now it seems like
the lifters start making noise right about when it is time to change the
oil ... I haven't determined if this is due to a change in the characteris-
tics of the oil or the fact that the oil level is down close to the ADD
level.
