Water pump drive gear

While I'm on the subject of interesting things, here's
another one. About two weeks ago, I changed the water
pump, idler pulley, and timing belt on my '86 5k. OK, so
that's not really all that interesting. What is interesting
is that the new water pump that I got (from Linda@Carlsen)
had the wrong drive gear on it. It was almost like a spur
gear, as opposed to a timing belt gear. Of course, (the
Audi gods forbid it should be any other way) I didn't
make this profound realization until I had the engine
fully torn apart. Luckily, I have a press, so I simply
put the old gear on the new pump. Unfortunately, the timing
belt gear is really only mean to be pressed *on*, not
off, and even with a proper bearing separator, etc. I was
not able to remove it without deforming it slightly.

So, now I have a water pump drive gear with a slight wobble.
Works fine, but does not give me any kind of warm fuzzy,
so I intend to remedy the situation shortly. Question is,
well two questions I guess, anyone ever had this happen
before, and do you think the pulley is available separately?
I doubt Linda will take the pump back now... If I can get
the pulley alone, I'll just put it on the pump and go my
merry way. If I can't, I guess I'll be buying a new water
pump again, and crack it up to one of the few disadvantages
of doing your own car work - not having a million-dollar
parts inventory at your disposal.

Well, later all,
