RPM Limiter

So what's suppost to happen when you "hit the wall" RPM wise?
In my old 82' VW Rabbit, when I reached maximum RPM, the engine would
run smoothly but the car stopped accelerating. I believe the fuel was
being interrupted by the fuel pump relay to cause this to happen.

On my 86 4000Q, At max RPM the car shakes and shutters like it running
on three (out of five) cylinders. Shift to the next gear and everything
is smooth again. Is it suppost to do that?

Both cars seem to use the same system. A wire from the coil goes to the fuel
pump relay. It counts the pulses and decides when to shut down. This is the
CIS-E system with a separate module for ignition and fuel.

Also, sometimes on my Audi, this seem to happen before the tach is on
the redline (maybe a couple hundred RPMs early).

Do I need a new fuel pump relay? Can you buy these for different RPMs?
 Thanks,

Barry
