I think things have gotten a little confused. My orginal question concerned
a 86' 4000Q. This of couse is a five cylinder. In 86 the fuel pump (on the 5's)
was not computer controlled. The fuel pump relay contains some electronic
circuitry to look for ignition pulses (a 555 chip for you EE types).
When too many pulses come in, the relay drops out. Also the relay won't close
if there are no pulses. This prevents it running when the ignition is on
but the engine isn't running.
On my old 82 Rabbit, when at max RPM, the car would seem to run smooth but
just stop accelerating. On my Audi, the car shakes and skips at the limit.
Do other peoples five cylinders do this? Also, sometimes it seem to happen
a few hundred RPM short of the tach redline (unless my tach is slow and just
didn't get there yet).
Now, for you hackers, I suppose I could just change a resisitor value
(or replace it with a pot) and set the limit higher.
Maybe I just need a new relay.....
Anyway, I said all that to ask... Is my car acting normally?
