vendor access (was re TAP)

I can't see why people are going rabid over allowing vendors on the net. If the
content is factual and relevant to any question that a non-vendor may have posed
then the vendor is providing a service. The 'holier-than-thou' attitude taken by
some is just plain childish. The net has grown up in the last few years, some
people's attitudes haven't.

The issue for me is how to accomodate bona-fide commercial interests, and at
the same
time protect the rest of us from sharks. How can we verify a vendor's technical
competence and trustworthiness as a supplier? The consumer protection
legislation in
the US may be adequate - but an opportunistic merchant could easily set up shop
in a country where there are no laws.
