I would check the subframe bushings -- on my '81, the metal bushings inside
the rubber broke free and let the subrame move up-and-down over bumps -- as
well as the little nut that holds the strut bushing to the strut.  If these
get loose (and if they aren't tightened with the correct tool, they will!),
they will make exactly the noise you describe.  A lot of mechanics will use
a hammer-and-punch to tighten them instead of the special tool and although
this appears to work, it's difficult to get them tight enough so they don't
subsequently loosen up.
