I just replaced mine - cause someone squrited superglue in the lock.  You cant 
hurt anything that you won't have to replace anyway by drilling straight into
the lock. (I think)
I'm not sure that that will un-lock to trunk, though - only thing to becareful
of is the little plastic connector that hooks the lock to the rod from the
vacuum
mechanism.  If you go the thru-back seat route (it is an allen-wrench thingy)
you will probably break that plastic bit and could bend the rod.  I got a
replacement lock from Shokan for $22 and had it re-keyed for $17.

If you can wait till tomorrow, I can look at mine tonight and see if theres a
way to rig it from the back seat so that it will open with the doors.  Also, you
might want to wait till you have a replacement so that you're not driving around
NYC without a lock.
