I had one of these radios unlocked by a computer type that massaged its
innards using a connection to his pc.  I don't know how, but he'll do it
again for $25.

Another suggestion was posted here and it seems odd to say the least, but
supposedly leaving the radio in a freezer at 0 degrees F for a day will
erase its memory.

The story I get from the dealers in our area is that when they send out a
radio with a code problem, there's ALWAYS a call from the repair center
concerning the list of other problems the radio has to have fixed (kind of
like the $16.95 'oil change' scam).

But...the good news is you can usually get an exchange unit from VAG for
under $100.
