All Sunroofs from pre March 1988 used a bad ( weak ) design for those
brackets. There was a service bulletin that recommended replacing
the cables, the track, and the two brackets all at the same
time.

I solved this problem about two years ago by using the guts from
an '88 5k, and the sunroof has given no trouble since.
