4000q in Ohio---should I?

I posted earlier about a 4000/jetta wanted in Ohio.  I think I might have 
found one, but would like some advice:

It's somewhere between '85-'87 (doesn't really matter,) 4000csq.  It has 
about 160k miles on it, but the body is nearly perfect.  I think I'm 
going to drive it after work, so I'll let you in on the mechanicals 
later.  The salesman "Really doesn't want to sell it...", but we were 
puttering around on the phone today, and he said "Make an offer..."  I 
said "No."

He said maybe about $3500, but I'm thinkin more like $2600-$3000.
Thoughts?
