I want to publicly thank all of you who responded with either sympathy or
suggestions (or both) to my earlier post(s) about a suddenly comatose
alternator in my '89 100Q. Though the brushes were .5mm below the Bentley
spec "wear limit", replacement of the brush set/regulator assembly did not
correct the problem of no charging, so I removed the alternator and took
it to one of our local rebuilders -- it seems that they merely resurfaced
the armature (? - the thing the brushes ride on), and she's now putting out
juice better than before. :) Oh yeh, for the record, got the Bosch brush
set/regulator for $50, plus $15 for the armature resurfacing; not too
bad a price after some of the horrific dealer quotes I first heard (and they
had to special-order the stuff anyway).

Again, thanks to you all for your encouragement!
