90q - buzzing sound (fuel pump ??)

My '90 90q20v is developing a buzzing sound - sure sound like the 
fuel pump from my '85 GTI.    The buzzing is rather soft (normal) when the 
engine is relatively cool.   But with a hot engine, the buzzing is 
abnormally loud.

Anyone have experience with that ?
Is it a sign of fuel pump problem ?  If so, is it like GTI which has 
a main pump and a transfer pump ?  Which one is bad ?

I would appreciate any help and insight that you may have.
