Audi 90 Idle stabiliser

I am new to this mailing list, but I hope someone can help.
I have a 1986 Audi 90 Quattro with 5cyl 2.2 litre engine.
(for those in USA the 90 is similar to a Fox)

Problem:
The idle stabiliser gets sticky with oil and stays shut giving zero tickover
speed.
As soon as the stabiliser is cleaned tickover is Ok.
If I disconnect the breather and this helps to delay the problem by a couple
of weeks.

Car has 100K miles but is not really using oil, about a pint every 2000 miles.

Any bright ideas?
