Bought '88 5ks...wheels/steam cleaning etc
Hi Guys (and Gals if we have any):
Well, I'm now the new owner of the 5spd '88 5ks w/ 86k I looked at last week.
Ended up paying $4400 (asking $5500). Picked it up on Saturday and then took
it on a trip to NYC on Sunday. Drives great but not as stiff as the '87 cst
which has Boge TG. I suspect with bigger wheels/tires, and stiffer shocks,
the handling will be similar. It does have 195/70R14 tires not 185/70. Since
I can't fit 5-lug Turbo wheels, is there any compatibility with VW, e.g. 15"
BBS rims from Jetta II GLI? Anyone interested in a set of stock 14" rims w/
fairly new all-season Yokos (SR rated)? Make me an offer!
Seems to burn more gas than the 5kcst, going only by the gauge so far.
The exterior/interior is exceptionally clean, nary a ding or scratch, 1 tiny
chip on the roof. A nice plus is a high-power Alpine stereo but the stock
ITT speakers aren't good enough so I'll be upgrading the speakers. I got the
original sticker and the color is that light silver blue, more silver than
blue (Polaris Silver? or something like that). In '88, Audi charged $1145 for
a power sunroof!!! I'd hate to think what it costs now as an option?!
The engine bay does not match the exterior in cleanliness. The car had a
leaking valve cover gasket (replaced by po) and there is a good deal of oil
mixed with red dirt brought back from Georgia everywhere. I started cleaning
with a brush, soap and water then moved on to mineral spirits. I can now see
the levels for the major fluids. My thoughts were to remove most of the
oil/gunk to ensure it's still not leaking and make it a friendly place to
work.
Any danger to electrical connections with steam-cleaning the engine bay? I
figure if I pay penance up-front to the Audi gods, I'll be spared their wrath
of espewed mineral oil in the hydraulic system :).
First order of business is a complete tune-up - belts look new, hoses good,
cap/rotor/plugs done 13k ago. I'll put in the Bosch Tri-electrodes I have in
the '87. Coolant/brake fluid needs changing. Timing belt is due and I'm
thinking of doing it myself. Any special tools needed like a pin spanner?
How critical is the tension on the belt?
Anyway, this is getting kinda long, thanks if you're still reading this far
and any opinions/experience to share appreciated!
