86 5ks electrical problem driving me nuts!!

I spent some time working on my gf's, soon to be fiance's, 86 5000s.  
As you will recall the battery keeps draining, the brake lights don't 
work, the shift lock won't release when you press the brake pedal, the 
shift lock will release when you turn on the headlights!

I probed around will my multimeter and noted the following:
1. Brake light switch works fine and is adjusted properly.
2. All tail lights work.
3. Wasn't able to check "3rd" brake light.
4. All fuses are good.
5. The power antenna motor sometimes stays on trying to retract a 
retracted mast.  I unpluged the power to it.  Maybe this was draining 
the battery.
6.  When the ignition is on and the motor is not running, a buzzing 
noise is coming from the middle of the gas tank...Fuel pump?  It is 
prety load and sounds like it may be electrical arching.
7.  I removed the steering wheel and the wiring behind it looks fine.
8.  I examined the wires in the trunk and didn't see any burned areas 
from a short.

Now for the weird part:
9. When I disconnect the left rear light housing, the shift lock will 
not release when I put on the headlights.
10. Same result as #5 when I remove fuse to left rear light assembly.
11. No changes when I disconnect the right rear assembly.

What is going on here?  I am running out of patience and may have to 
take it in to the shop....oh no!!!  Any and all help would be 
appreciated.
