    My original compressor was altogether silent.

    All that got changed in my system was the compressor.  Besides,
    there's no "idler pulley" in the belt to the compressor.  The only
    idler pulley is the one that tensions your cam drive belt.  The 
    alternator, hydraulic pump and A/C compressor each have their own belt,
    and each component is separately adjustable to tension it's belt.

    Makes me wonder if your noise is the same as mine?  Mine is a loud
    whirring noise, that gets louder the higher you rev the engine.
    At 3000 it's not too bad, but by 4000 it's real objectionable.
    If you pitch your voice real low, and say whirrrrrrrrrrrrr ...
    it's about like that  :-P

    I'll try adding refrigerant oil, I have the manifold guages needed
    for this.  But, this is a Delco swash plate piston pump, not one of
    the York piston pumps.

    Thanks for the suggestions guys!  I'll keep you posted on what
    happens from here.
