I've got an '88 5k non-turbo Q. The compressor works, but the mag clutch is
hurtin'. You might check this as well. Luckily on the '88, Audi uses the
Nippondenso compressor where the mag clutch is a separate assembly. You can
get one for around $120 through the discount guys listed on the server.

I'm putting off replacing mine until I have no choice. There isn't a lot of
space to work with in front of the compressor.
