Eric - I'm fighting a trans. problem. The tranny and diff are two
separate systems and require different lubes. The diff does require
a synthetic, as use of standard lube eventually results in failure
unless the owner is fanatic about keeping the level checked.

I think it is CRITICAL to change fluid often in the 5K -100-200
series. I am investigating this - and have found that there is a
specific and VERY expensive failure of pump and 1st/rear shell. One
dealer in Austin has done *30* rebuilds or trans. replacements, most
on 100/200 models. My opinion is that this transmission is NOT
enough for the car - especially turbos - and is excessively failure-
prone. I'd love to go after Audi as a group, but don't know that I
will go to the trouble.

I have also been informed that it's cheaper to replace the whole
trans. than to rebuild - the mechanic gets 30 hours labor, plus parts.

So - what am I going to do when the DAMN thing is back together?
1) Run synthetic trans. oil
2) Change at no more than 30K intervals

The trans/diff seal, according to what I've heard, is a bogus issue.
There is no direct connection and flud interchange should not be
possible.
