Maybe the following information will help as far as the VW numbering system:

The first three digits are the type, model, or version.
The next single digit is the main group. (1. Engine, 3. Transmission, 8.
body, etc. etc.
The next two digits are the sub group of the main group.
The next three digits designate the part number. If there is a left and right
side version, the left is odd and the right is even.
The final letter, if any is the Modification Code to the part. (Hopefully,
better each time.)
