I finally got a quattro (well, sort of...) - Part 2

.... What's the second thing I did? I worried. It was running VERY hot and
the fan was cycling on and off all the time, even on the highway. In
technical terms, this is a Bad Thing. I know these cars tend to run warm,
but this was ridiculous. Hoping for a miracle, I got a new thermostat and,
lo and behold, the old one was bad! It had a rubber gasket for the plunger
to seat against, and the gasket had split and was blocking the flow. With
the new 'stat, the gauge was now steady, but still 80% of the way to the hot
mark. I worried even more, as dollar signs floated before my eyes. After
much searching, my local NAPA store (who'd of guessed!) had a 180 degree
stat, rather than the 195 everyone else recommended. That's installed now,
and the guage is steady at about 60% to the hot mark. I feel better, but
still drive with my eye on the temp guage more than the road.
Here's the perplexing part: the radiator fan still comes on. When I shut the
engine off sometimes, I hear it running but it stops after about 10 seconds.
Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? The fan definately comes on when the
coolant gets hot, but seem to run other times, too.
Well, that's about it for now.
