a/c clutch slipping

The a/c clutch is slipping - turning (slowly) even when a/c is off.  
I suppose the clearance between the clutch and pulley is gone.
The mechanic said he can remove the clutch and add a shim to bring 
the clutch out.  And he can do that without removing the compressor 
from the car.    Has anyone got any experience with that ?
