Yep, the company changed from Schmidt Motorsport GMBH to SMS AG in 1991 ...
according to the article, the employees built the first S2 on a whim merely
to see if it could be done (apparently, Audi's engineers claimed the engine
compartent was too small) then convinced Audi management there was a market
for the car. As such, giving them the design contract would seem a logical
conclusion...
In any event, be thankful that *somebody* cares about these cars enough to
design and sell parts for them!
