Chris:
I just purchased the Bentley electrical troubleshooting guide for my 1990 Coupe Quattro. Based on my experience, you be better off running a 10 or 12 gauge dedicated power line to the battery, fused as close to the battery as possible.

This will definitely minimize any potential for picking up alternator noise, and not limit the current to the amplifier.

If you really want to tap into the existing wires, check under the rear seat. There are power lines for the ABS computer, and the rear differential....

BTW: which amplifier are you installing? where in the hatch? I'm very frustarted with the current stereo, but all solutions seem to be very high $$$$. I can replace the head unit easily enough, but the front speakers are odd sized, the rear speakers have their own built in mono amps. There is little or no room for a cd player, let alone a deadicated amplifier!

Thanks and good luck!
