 ANSWERS:

 1.) Usually the cable, but hard to tell without checking.

 2.) The temp adjustment lever moves a hot water valve
 on the hat exchanger, i th engine coompartment toward
 the firewall.  You'll see it.  It goes regularly,
 and the hot air from the heater overwhelms the
 dinky AC.

 3.) All the time.  The mast is replaceable.  Lubricate it
 regularly.  OR, replace with a fixed mast.
