Transmission Story
Well, my 1990 200T is back on da road. I decided to have a local guy
(a prima donna, but one with a reputation for *ZERO* returns) rebuild
the whole automatic tranny, including torque converter. Cost: $1547.
Compared to doing business with an Audi dealer, I consider this
(gag! ..choke!...harf!) to be a bargain.
It is now ALL Amsoil ATF - since he filled the torque converter with
it on the bench. He also replaced the synthetic lube in the transaxle
as per Audi specs. (Never hurts...and he won't do it any other way.)
Results: the transmission is as responsive as it ever was, or more
so. He re-programmed the shift points, resulting in more assertive
shifts. Used to be that even with my foot on the floor, the tranny
would upshift about 5K rpm - but now if I keep my foot plastered down,
it revs to the 6300 rpm redline before upshifting. This makes the 1-
2 upshift happen about 55 mph, and the 2-3 upshift about 100 mph.
(Hey, you gotta test these things...)
I will still pursue Audi about the transmission situation, but I had
to get this done!!
