The easy test for an OK accumulator is to (with the engine off) depress
the brake pedal multiple times until one gets to the "hard stop". You
should be able to get assist for 15-20 strokes on an old acummulator and
30+ on a new one. Be careful to not overflow the reservoir since you
will be returning fluid from the acummulator to the reservoir.
Another test is to look at the fluid level in the reservoir before
starting the engine and then after it is running a while. If the level
drops significantly, then you have a leak *through* the acummulator and
it will not hold much pressure.
The dashboard light comes on either for low fluid or low pressure in the
brake hydraulic system. If the light comes on at all at engine start after
the "OK" symbol then it is likely the acummulator is has bled down over
night.
Al, sounds like Shokan's "used but working" acummulator only meets one
of those criteria.
