As STEADIRIC pointed out, the engine block will fill up through the
upper radiator hose. If I remember correctly, the thermostat on the
Audi 2.2 is at the lower radiator hose inlet to the block. Also the
thermostat usually has a small weep hole to allow air/coolant to escape so
the block will fill up. Just give it a few minutes to fill up before
starting the car. Then let it idle and keep adding more coolant to
the expansion tank as the level drops. Its only after the thermostat
has opened and the coolant circulated for sometime will the pockets
of air get completely eliminated.
I have installed one of those coolant flushing tees in the heater hose.
This tee is part of the Prestone Coolant Flushing Kit available at most
auto stores for about $5. It really helps flush the system fast by
connecting a garden hose to the tee via a fitting. This same tee allows
air to bleed out of the system when you're refilling it. Some people on
this list have reported that the cap on the tee has started leaking over
time. I have installed the tee in 5 different cars and never had a problem
in 8 or 9 years.
