I too have experienced this on my Audis but the rotors are cheap enough that
I just replace them along with the pads every 20-30k or so.

In my experience, I've never been able to visually determine the amount of
wear on CV joints -- I've seen several that look okay but clunk badly when
the wheels are turned -- so I suspect this is your problem.  I've broken a
lot of inner joints while racing but never had to replace them on a street
car, including an '81 4000 (80 to you) that lasted 280,000 miles...
