When I spoke with him on the telephone a couple of months ago, Steve made it
VERY clear that his objectitive was to win a National Championship. I don't
recall him qualifying that statement with "in a 4kq" so I'd be careful about
attributing motives to him.

This sounds like the drivel I used to hear from the Porsche club folks every
time I'd beat them in my '81 4000 ... if you're content to just run regional
events, you'll do very well indeed in a 4kq (or even a 5k, for that matter!)
but you're making a BIG mistake if you try to extrapolate local success into
a National Championship. Unfortunately, the Local Hero often turns into the
National Chump if he isn't careful...
