Don't confuse an engine designed for racing with an engine designed for long
life on the street. The BTCC cars are rev limited to 8500 rpm and built for
one purpose only: winning races. They have narrow powerbands (1500-2000 rpm
in most cases) and gearboxes to match, and they don't have to last more than
two hours or so between rebuilds.
BTW, Cosworth is reputed to have spent a cool L500,000 (that's US$8-900,000)
developing the 2-liter Mondeo motors for Ford and most of the factory-backed
teams have a budget upwards of L1,000,000 (US$1,800,000) for the season. In
fact, last year, those-in-the-know claim Alfa spent US$4-5,000,000 for their
championship and BMW wasn't very far behind...
