I find this interesting since changing the cam timing will also change the
ignition timing ... advancing the cam 4 degrees on my '87 5k made a fairly
noticeable improvement off idle (which is exactly what I wanted since it's
got a sluggish slushbox) but I also lost a bit above 5k.  Any variable cam
gear for 4cyl VWs will work but I used one from Techtonics Tuning that was
$80 or so.  Also, the well-known VW trick of bumping the timing at idle by
another 5-6 degrees worked well on my car and didn't cost anything...
