Bumping cam on a NA 2.2?

In reference to the multiple posts on bumping the cam timing on a 
turbocharged engine, is there any benefit to the same procedure on a 
normally aspirated engine?

If there is a performance increase, what are the downsides?  reduced fuel 
economy?  (& how much?)  premature wear of _________?  a great increase 
the amount of heat the engine produces?   etc...
