I don't disagree ... in fact, I can think of two cars that haven't been run
seriously by anyone that might be very competitive in the right hands. But
the only Audi that fits into that category is the late '87 Coupe GT with an
NF or NG code (I forget which) 130hp motor...

But of course! Unless you're a A-level driver, though, contingencies don't
really matter since you have to finish in the top three to collect ... I've
learned this the hard way!

That would be Ken and Todd Rupp from Carrollton. A friend of mine who just
happened to work at the GM proving grounds took a close look at their Fiero
GT way back when and ticked off several "questionable" (read: illegal) mods
they'd made to it ... I'm not saying their cars are illegal per se, but I'm
certain they're very, VERY well prepared.

It wasn't a 4000 but an '87 Coupe GT driven by Carl Zeilon, who worked as a
parts guy for an Audi dealership in Milwaukee. At the '89 Nationals, I was
quicker than him on the North course but tanked on the South ... in the end
he beat me by a little over .25 seconds and took 6th place, leaving me with
7th. I believe the highest a 4kq has ever placed at the Nationals was 13th
in 1990...

Agreed ... I just thought some words straight from the horse's mouth would
make a fitting epitaph for the thread, may it rest in peace.
