Regarding your message about your Audi overheating problem:

I had an old BMW that did basically the same thing as you said in 
your steps.  I thought for sure it was the thermostat so I got a new 
one (a $30 part on a BMW).  It kept overheating in heavy traffic, 
etc.  Turned out to be the water pump.  Don't know if it is in your 
case and I am by no means an expert but it sounds very similar to 
what happened to me!
