Oil temp sending unit

Q,

I am trying to replace the oil temperature sending unit I am currently
using, which screws into the drain plug in the oil pan of my '83 urQ.  This
has been a source of leaks for some time.

I have been told by my shop that I could use the Audi sending unit which
goes into the oil pump, but when I checked the resistance and compared it
to the VDO catalog notes, it was not even close.  I called VDO, and they
confirmed that it won't work, and gave me a different set of resistance
values.

Are there other places on the engine that can accept an oil temperature
sending unit?
