John - the symptoms you report are a DIRECT indication that the
hydraulic pump is going out. This requires a total teardown and
rebuild. I found a VERY sharp guy in town who could do it for the
bargain price of $1500. If you don't think that's good - Audi will
sell only the transmission AND transaxle (no transmission
separately!!) for over $3000!!!!!!!!! Your other option is to find a
used/rebuilt unit to put in, which you may be able to do cheaper than
rebuilding your own. If so, replace the torque converter at the same
time, as a rebuilt is not expensive. This DOES require dropping the
transaxle. On re-install, OVERFILL as per factory advice with
synthetic lube.

Your observation about temp - -
It's OK when cold and bad when warm because the fluid runs thinner
when it's warm, and the pump seals fail to hold. This problem shows
up first in Reverse, then progresses to forward gears. This car
needs big $$ work The symptoms are classic..
