Tom:
I can't speak for the 90 series, but I do own a 92 100S with the 172 HP 2.8L
V6. It is a wonderful, beautiful, car and I have found the engine to be
great. From what I have read in Consumer Reports magazine, this was a
recommended car in the $15-20k range. The reliability record was very high.
So far, I have not had any great problems (except that the dealer decided to
put in a new tranny when I told them it shifted funny; it was under warranty,
so I didn't mind). The car has good power but is not a stoplight demon. But
that's OK, cuz this car was made for the highways, and boy is it ever! It is
great on the highways! I do a lot of highway driving, and I love it. The
handling is wonderful.
Overall, definitely, there is adequate/more-than-adequate power in my opinion
(sure, more is better but.....).
I can't give you feedback on the 5 cyl. engine for comparison; this is my
first Audi. I'm sure you will get some info from those that cherish them (or
dare I say hate them?)
Good luck!
P.S. Low/easy maintenance is important to me too. On my car, it is very easy
to change the oil, oil filter, air filter, and spark plugs (that's all I've
done so far.) It is nice to have an engine in-line, as opposed to transverse.
There's a lot of room to work in there.
Also, re: safety. I feel VERY safe in my car. FYI, in 1993, I believe they
started putting in dual airbags, if that is important to you. In 1992, just
driver's side.
If I can be of any other help, please feel free to E-mail me.
