bad heater cores?

What's the track record of Audi heater cores?  I imagine there
must be quite a few that have failed, since VW and Audi used
the same French made parts a few years back.  VW recalled their
cores, but to my knowledge, Audi never did.

Reason I ask is that I'm smelling a bit of coolant from my heater
vents.  My wife added a bit of coolant to the overflow tank the other
day, and perhaps added too much, but I think it's the core.  I'm 
selling the car so I don't care too much :), but it would be nice
to give the new owner a way to get it fixed for free...
