Coupe question

I drive a 1986 Audi Coupe GT.  It is a beautiful car but unfortunately I
thought an automatic transmission would be a better choice for me since I
commute over 75 miles daily in heavy Los Angeles traffic.  It is painfully
slow.  I've noticed that the transmission doesn't hold first very long.  It
shifts between 3000 and 4000 rpm, way before the 6500rpm horsepower peak.  In
fact,  I don't think it ever goes that high.  Please say this is abnormal....
