i bought extended warranty for my v8. cost $800. the car "consumed"
a lot of factory warranty, but after 50K the car became quite problem
free. however, a couple of things did go out after 50K, like the
pressure accumulator, the headlight switch and one or two more things
which i can't remember anymore.. anyway, the claims made on the
extended warranty easily exceeded the cost, so in my case it turned
out to be a good deal.
several things to look out for:
1) how much longer will the ext. warranty cover? if it's only to 100K
it doesn't sound too promising
2) how much does the dealer want for it? it could be costing them $100
but they could be selling it to you for $1000.. by all means haggle with
them.. there are huge margins in these things.
3) read the fine print. reread the fine print. audis have a lot of unusual
parts (such as the pressure accumulator) that is not explicitly mentioned in
the fine print. when making a claim, they would try to turn down anything
that is not explicitly mentioned. you will need the help of the dealership
to make things "fit" into the fine print. that will depend on how much the
dealership would like to help you. it is a lot easier (and a lot more
profitable) for them to repeat the line that "it's not covered" and charge
you full retail.
i don't know if there are such things as "exclusionary warranties"
anymore.. these cover *everything* except (list of things) rather
than the other way round.
