... your initial description was the proper behavior based on the experi-
ence of my car.  My observations on the '88 5kCSTQW is that when the igni-
tion switch is on, the window/sunroof switches are illuminated.  After the 
ignition is switched off the switches remain illuminated for a short period.  
If a switch is actuated all the switches are again illuminated for a few 
seconds.  As soon as either front door is opened the circuit is deactivated.

I suspect that from your description you will be able to roll the windows 
up and down as long as you see the switches illuminated.  I was thinking 
that the problem was due to a malfunction of the door switch, but if this 
were the case the illumination would switch off eventually.  You're problem 
may be that the ignition on signal to the window/sunroof power controller 
is always on or the power controller itself has failed.  The wiring diagram 
in the Bentley manual should give you the info you need.

I don't know if you regularly open the passenger's side door, but if not 
it may be worth a try ...
