Ignoring the clues in the next paragraph, this could be:
- ignition switch not providing starter juice in start position
- solenoid intermittently open
The easiest thing to check is juice in the start position, since the wire
is readily accessible under the steering wheel. If the switch is providing
juice, it sounds like the solenoid is on vacation.
