Re: 83 UrQ no start

This may or may not be related to the problem.

I have an '83 TQC. For years I have had intermittent starter problems,
to wit, 1 out of 50 times the solenoid would not engage. It never would
fail to the extent that I was willing to take the time to deal with it.
But finally I found some free time to kill the litte annoyance.

Recently I changed the ignition switch and thought I'd fixed but the
monster came back to bug me.

I had long thougt it was a "lack of current to the solenoid" problem. As
it turns out the current flow is from the ignition switch to the fuse box
and then out the the solenoid. On my car it appears the the fuse box was
limiting the current to the solenoid. I say this because I re-wired the
circuit so the high current path to the solenoid by passes the fuse box.

OLD WIRING

    ignition ----------- fuse --------------solenoid
    switch box
                          |
                        cold start
                        valve

NEW WIRING

    ignition--------------------------------solenoid
    switch |
             ------------fuse
                         box
                          |
                         cold start
                         valve

The mods above has finally fixed the problem.
