There is a firm out in the sticks near by that has a six-speed option for 
VW 5-sp trans (water cooled, that is).   I visited them not to long ago.  
Out front of the shop was a mutant vanagon with a Chev V8.  The deck of 
the engine compartment was raised a few inches.  So, there appears to  be 
plenty of room if you have a few good cutting tools.
