I bought a cap wrench made by Hazet that fits nicely on the top of the
cap and can be used for installation as well.  Before I found the Hazet
wrench I never found another acceptable alternative.  

I did have one situation arise where the filter seal attached itself to 
the mounting flange.  I couldn't even break the thing loose with the 
screwdriver thru the filter technique and was left with the oil filter
base attached to the flange!  I found a pin wrench that had the pins
separated by the width of the outlet holes.  I was able to remove the 
base with the pin wrench ...
