Re: 80GL(UK): Steering Noise (on full lock)
The other three possible cause for the front end to make a
clunking sound other than a bad cv-joint. If your 80 are similar
to the 100 which has adjustable camber plates on the front strut
towers then make sure they are probably tighten. A loose camber
plate will definitely make a clunking noise. This had happened to me
after a front end alignment. There three nuts on top of the camber
plate on each strut tower on the 100 but I am not sure about the
80.
Second possible cause which also happened to me once was the lock
nut on the tie-rod end adjuster came loose. It happened to me after
I drove over an innocent puddle of water which turn out to be a huge
pothole.
Third possible cause is from the front wheel bearings. When they
are slightly worn they might slip a little bit in the hub housing
and make a clunking noise. I know everybody is going to tell you
that a worn front wheel bearing will make a grinding or rubbing
noise but trust me this had happened to me. I was sure that
it was from the front wheel bearing and the axle retaining nut was
not loose. The car seemed to drive fine no play in the front end
but I keep hearing the clunking when I turn it from lock to lock.
I finally had the front wheel bearing replaced.
