The engine speed for 60-65 mph sounds about right, I have an 85' 5000s
with automatic transmission and at 60-65 mph it's engine speed is
around 3000-3500 rpm, it varies between that range depending on the
load it is carry and also the gradient of the road that you are on.
I can't answer your other question since I haven't tried what you did.
