This has been a huge source of discussion on the OffRoad list every year the
snow starts to fall. About half the list seems to think the best traction is
had by having the snow stick between the treads, so the stuck snow can get
traction by sticking to the snow on the ground. The other half of the list
believes that the best traction is had by having treads that will clear
themselves, so the tires themselves can use the treads to grip the snow. No
one side has proven itself to be better than the other, I doubt it'll happen on
this list either!! FWIW, the tires I've got on my Scout _do_ clean themselves
and use the tread to grip the snow. However, the tires on the Scout are also
three feet tall (well, almost, they're 35's) and have about an inch and a half
of tread, so I don't think I'd have a traction problem using either technique.
