Bryan, most likely your lifters are the culprit. Another possible (although
unlikely) source of the noise is your exhaust manifold. If one of the studs
breaks, leaking exhaust can sound just like noisy lifters. As the car warms
up, the metal expands, making the noise go away. However, most likely the
noise is your lifters. My advise to you (and you will probably hear this same
advice from many more on this list) is to leave it alone. You could have the
lifters replaced, but it will cost you a bundle, and most likely the noise will
still be there. Audi's like to make lifter noise, that's part of their
character. Unfortunately, ya gotta learn to live with it! The noise you hear
is not detrimental to the car, just a little obnoxious to hear. Ya got ten
speakers in that car, just crank the stereo (I find "Nine Inch Nails" or "The
Butthole Surfers" works best) for about five minuts after startup. Lifter
noise goes away after that! Welcome to the Wonderful World of Audi's...
